Factory Media Centre is thrilled to announce that Emma Eichenberg will be joining us as our first 2026 &NOW Artist-in-Residence!
During her residency, Emma is working on an expanded iteration of an earlier project, sewers v.1, an animated video work that reimagined the continuous movement of water through Hamilton’s Beasley neighbourhood sewer systems. The project builds on research into underground infrastructure and urban geographies, exploring how these systems mirror larger geological rhythms. Through conducting fieldwork in Hamilton’s Beasley and North End neighbourhoods the work seeks to examine the duality between subterranean and atmospheric layers, the fast-moving asthenosphere below and the calm stratosphere above, and how these strata echo the hidden flows beneath Hamilton’s infrastructure.
About the Artist
Emma Eichenberg is an artist residing in the occupied territories of the Erie, Neutral, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee, and Mississaugas, known as Hamilton ON, primarily working in printmaking, painting, and exploring new media practices. Her practice conceptually engages with the deterioration and changes in her vision due to an eye condition. Eichenbergs’ shifting perceptions of colours inform material exploration through creating her own oil paints as a method of regaining visual control. Alongside painting, Emma’s print work contrasts her conceptual focuses and exists as an outlet for exploratory silliness and cynicism, and archiving textural experiences. Additionally, Eichenberg’s printing practice uses text to engage with queer zines and publication practices.
